[Austin, TX] Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has officially broken ground on its Midfield Taxiways project, a critical component of the airport’s future concourse expansion plans. RS&H has been an integral partner in the Journey with AUS program, as the lead engineering firm for the Midfield Taxiways project. As part of the Journey with AUS multi-year Airport Expansion and Development Program, the midfield taxiways project provides connectivity between the east and west sides of the airport. This significant development is set to enhance the airport’s operational capabilities and pave the way for future growth.

The Midfield Taxiways project involves the construction of two parallel taxiways, each 4,170 feet long, connecting Taxiway C in the west to Taxiway B in the east. Key elements of the project include the construction of two taxiway bridges and substantial modifications to utility and storm sewer systems. RS&H’s contributions to the Journey with AUS Program include enhanced connectivity and sustainability efforts. The new taxiways will significantly improve airfield connectivity, facilitating smoother and more efficient aircraft movements. RS&H’s leadership in the Envision verification effort attributes a commitment to sustainable practices, including using Type 1L cement, native plant landscaping, and improved stormwater infrastructure.

“This project is a testament to the power of collaboration, vision, and innovation. As Austin continues to grow as a hub for business, culture, and travel, infrastructure like this plays a critical role in ensuring that we keep pace with that growth. These midfield taxiways will allow for other portions of the program to move forward, improve safety and efficiency, enhance the passenger experience, and support the region’s economic development.” – Byron Chavez, PE, Project Manager

The Midfield Taxiways project is scheduled for completion in 2026. This groundbreaking marks a significant milestone in AUS’s journey to meet Austin and Central Texas’s current and future needs. Learn more about our partnership with AUS.
