Wilmington Bypass Wins ENR Southeast Award

January 10, 2019

The Wilmington Bypass, an extension of the Interstate 140 loop around Wilmington, North Carolina, has been recognized by ENR Southeast as the best highway and bridge project in the Southeast for 2018.

Wilmington Bypass.

RS&H designed two parallel, prestressed concrete bridges that stretch 7,200 feet over the Cape Fear River as part of the $124 million, three-mile-long project. The new extension completes a 15-year-long planning and development effort by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to relieve growing traffic congestion in New Hanover and Brunswick counties.

The approach spans consist of 78-inch deep precast modified bulb tees made up of three-span continuous for live load units. The main span unit over the Cape Fear River utilizes continuous spliced 78-inch deep precast modified bulb tees post tensioned for continuity to carry three spans at 225 feet, 280 feet, and 225 feet for a total length of 730 feet. At the river crossing the superstructure is supported by single-column hammer head bents on pile footings.

RS&H Senior Bridge Group Leader Richard Bollinger Jr. served as project manager on the Cape Fear River bridges, which opened to traffic in November 2017.
