City of Roswell
Roswell, GA
RS&H designed a new roundabout for the Hardscrabble Green Loop, a segment of the City’s Roswell Loop. The goal of the Roswell Loop is to connect the City’s schools and parks with sidewalks and trails. This project featured two, 4-foot-wide bicycle lanes, a 10-foot-wide multi-use path on the south side of Hardscrabble Road, and a 5-foot sidewalk on the north side of Hardscrabble Road. RS&H provided comprehensive turnkey services, overseeing the project from design through construction. Quality, safety, and minimizing impacts on historical and cultural resources and right-of-way were critical components of this project.
The complete streets project improvements were crucial in addressing safety concerns associated with a projected 12% increase in traffic. The design incorporated two mid-block pedestrian crossings with Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacon push-button assemblies to increase pedestrian crossing visibility driven by a park, two schools, and residential areas along the corridor.
As an early portion of the Roswell Loop, this project was a catalyst for further implementation of bicycle and pedestrian-friendly routes throughout the city. It established the design parameters for subsequent projects, promoting a safer and more connected urban environment.
The city, residents, and adjacent schools considered the project a huge success. It created a safe and functional corridor for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, all while effectively handling projected traffic growth without requiring additional traffic signals along the route.
The project received local, state, and national recognition, and was awarded the ACEC Engineering in Excellence Award. It is a prime example of RS&H’s leadership and technical expertise, highlighting a commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions.
