As part of IDOT’s long-term US 20 improvement plans, this project in Kane County, IL enhances safety and mobility for all modes of transportation while increasing the service life of US 20. The existing structure was built in 1959 and consists of a simple span steel wide-flange beam bridge with 71’-10 1/8” back-to-back abutments, out-to-out deck width of 70’-0 5/8”, and closed abutments on spread footings.
RS&H is providing construction engineering and inspection services for the replacement of the steel beam bridge carrying IL 31 over US 20 and reconstruction of the interchange ramp sections. Maintenance of traffic includes detouring for staged demolition for bridge replacement and US 20 entrance and exit ramps. A 10-foot shared-use path and seven-foot sidewalk will be constructed, and traffic signals and lighting will be replaced throughout the project. This project will also include replacement of the City of Elgin’s watermain, sanitary sewer, and fiber optic conduit. RS&H is also providing drone aerial progress imaging for this project.
