Active Ways to Boost Your Mental Health

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, serving as a vital reminder to prioritize our well-being and support those around us. Mental health is not a passive state. It requires continuous effort, practical strategies, and commitment to nurturing our minds alongside our bodies. Taking proactive steps to care for our psychological health empowers us to handle challenges with resilience and clarity.

At RS&H, we know that our associates deliver their best work when they feel supported, energized, and balanced. That is why we are actively encouraging our team to step away from their screens and engage in our firmwide art contest during this Mental Health Awareness Month. This initiative offers a chance to tap into curiosity, explore new perspectives, and take a mental break.

Our art contest highlights a fundamental truth: taking active, creative steps can significantly improve your mental outlook. You do not have to be a professional artist or an elite athlete to see the benefits.

Here is a closer look at active ways you can positively impact your mental health.

Channel Your Creativity Through Art

Engaging in creative activities is a proven method for reducing stress and anxiety. According to a 2023 survey, 71% of adults who reported very good or excellent mental health also engaged in creative activities such as listening to music, drawing, or dancing. When your hands are active, your brain shifts its focus away from lingering worries and into the present moment. This state of flow allows you to process complex emotions and find a sense of calm.

Build Physical Resilience with Exercise

The connection between physical movement and mental health is undeniable. Regular exercise releases endorphins, which act as natural mood elevators. Staying active helps clear the mind, improves sleep quality, and boosts overall energy levels

You do not need to commit to grueling workouts to see results. Find an activity that fits your lifestyle and matches your fitness level. Consider these practical options:

  • Take a brisk walk during your lunch break to clear your head.
  • Join a local recreational sports league to combine exercise with teamwork.
  • Try a short, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) session at home.
  • Go for a bike ride on a nearby trail to explore your community.

Every step you take is a deposit into your long-term mental and physical health.

Step Outside and Connect with Nature

Spending time outdoors offers a unique reset for an overwhelmed mind. Natural environments lower cortisol levels, reducing feelings of stress and mental fatigue. Sunlight provides essential vitamin D, which plays a critical role in mood regulation.

Make it a habit to take your active routine outdoors. Swap the treadmill for a neighborhood park or take your sketchbook to a local botanical garden. Breathing fresh air and observing the natural world fosters a sense of peace and grounds you in the present moment.

Creating a Supportive Environment Together

While individual actions are crucial, mental health thrives in a supportive community. Sharing our goals and participating in group activities fosters a deep sense of belonging.

Encourage your colleagues, friends, and family to join you in activities that build connection. Plan a group hike, host a casual painting night, or simply agree to hold each other accountable for taking daily walking breaks.

Start small today. Choose one activity—whether it is sketching a picture, going for a ten-minute walk, or practicing deep breathing—and commit. By taking ownership of your mental well-being, you empower yourself to choose your own path, both in your personal life and in your career.

Please note that we are not mental health professionals, and the strategies shared here are meant for general guidance and inspiration. If you are facing serious mental health challenges or concerns, we strongly encourage you to reach out to a licensed mental health professional or counselor for personalized support and assistance. The 988 Lifeline is available 24/7/365.
