Orlando Health’s South Lake Hospital Center for Specialty Surgery will be a unique center, featuring observation rooms for patients recovering from more extensive outpatient surgeries such as orthopedic, podiatry and pain management procedures.

With the aim of performing total joint replacement surgeries – long, multidiscipline surgeries that require a longer recovery time – Orlando Health South Lake Hospital’s facility will allow patients to recover without having to go into an acute care hospital setting. Hospitalists, not usually found in surgery centers, will monitor patients after surgeries requiring less than a 24-hour recovery.

RS&H is the lead architect for this ground-up outpatient surgery center, located on a large parcel immediately behind the hospital in Clermont, Florida. The 28,696-square-foot facility features interventional program units, four operating rooms of varied sizes with supporting clean core and restricted corridor, and two large procedure rooms. The perioperative environment includes eight pre-operative bays, eight post-operative bays, four phase II recliner bays, and a five-bed observational unit.

The exterior features an entrance cut out of building façade. Guests are welcomed under an enclosed canopy with hardwood ceilings. Tilt-up concrete construction with formed reveals completes the exterior look.

Inside, the reception area shows off many of the biophilic elements in the interior design. Water elements are introduced in the background, as water fountains feature a glass mosaic backsplash wall. The reception desk form mimics entry sequence to the building form. Additionally, a café is provided for family and visitors because of the longer procedure and recovery times. With this in mind, more seating options, including booths and lounge chairs are available.

The surgery center is expected to be completed in November.
