When thinking about the future of transportation and tolling, there are a few key questions that members of the industry should keep at the top of their minds.
What does the future hold for transportation and tolling? What and who will drive the changes and innovations?
Recently, I participated on a panel of experts and discussed these questions at the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association’s (IBTTA) 84th Annual Meeting. As part of the conference’s theme, “People, Partnerships and Progress,” the panelists talked about how these three areas will affect the industry and what opportunities they may provide in the future.
Some of the main takeaways from this energetic panel that can help guide our leadership challenges and opportunities are:
Employees: Companies need to adapt to the next generation of employees in an effort to meet their expectations. For example, they should consider adopting flexible hours and integrating a work-life balance.
Customers: Companies will need to better evaluate user needs in order to adapt to an ever expanding customer base, such as using technology, mobile apps, and social media to interact and respond in a more timely fashion.
Multimodal: Will the private sector emerge as the leader in multimodal transportation (regional passenger rail, gondola, freight, personal vehicles) innovations?
Public-Private Partnerships (P3s): Large technology companies (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple) have the means and resources to develop partnerships with each other, and public agencies, in order to improve transportation.
Centralized Customer Service Centers (CSC): The achievement of multimodal transportation in the future will be accomplished through consolidated and centralized CSC processes and transaction handling.
Autonomous Vehicles: We’ll need to accept and embrace the impacts this technology may have on our industry, and use industry partnerships to help direct the future of the automobile.
New Technologies: Let’s partner with technology leaders to help shape the impacts on the industry.
These three themes, regardless of the industry, will continue to be an important focus for all successful companies and agencies. Changes and innovations in transportation are inevitable and on the near horizon. Are you preparing for what’s coming down the pike?
