[Portland, OR] RS&H has announced that Alex Howard joined the national engineering, architecture and consulting firm as principal consultant to lead resilience and sustainability projects in the northwest region of the country. In this role, Howard will build client relationships across markets and sectors, including ports, airports, local government and transportation.

Howard brings two decades of public sector planning and program management experience to RS&H. Most recently, she worked at the Port of Portland, where she led an airport resilience program, advanced the Portland International Airport Resilient Runway project, formed a new public affairs policy program and provided regional government affairs expertise. Before the port, she worked for the City of Portland for over 12 years on topics ranging from floodplain resilience policy and regulatory compliance to transit and land use planning to inclusive community engagement. She earned a master’s in urban planning from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an undergraduate degree in English from Reed College.

“We are extremely excited to expand our resilience and sustainability capabilities in the northwest and nationally, where Alex will help clients work through the complexities of identifying critical needs, addressing vulnerabilities, and implementing resilience and sustainability initiatives. Alex’s passion, expertise, and ability to unite diverse groups to form cohesive, implementable, and integrated resilience solutions in our planning and design will greatly improve our work,” shares John Lengel, Vice President at RS&H.

The Environmental Stewardship and Resilience (ESR) Service Group at RS&H helps clients meet existing environmental compliance obligations and improve their ability to withstand climate stressors and thrive under changing conditions through our resilience and sustainability work. ESR seeks to identify compliance obligations and sustainability and resilience opportunities as early as possible in the project lifecycle. Incorporating resilience and sustainability considerations into early planning and design or ongoing operations allows us to develop and implement plans and practices that reduce the impact on the environment, foster a great relationship within the community, and many times result in cost savings.
