Central Distribution Center Addition and Renovation, Kanto Plain, Sagami Depot, Japan

When DeCA’s main Central Distribution Centers that service Tokyo and the surrounding region needed renovations, they called upon RS&H to help investigate and design the best solution that fits their needs.

RS&H conducted on-site investigations and then evaluated several alternatives of how to best sustain each facility, as well as an option to consolidate the two separate facilities into one. During the site geotechnical investigation it was discovered that there were existing World War-era air raid tunnels below the surface and, in some cases, directly under the building. This impacted the early design concepts; however, RS&H adapted to the unique site condition and provide a workable solution that did not require extensive site work.

The consolidation of the facilities was selected and the consolidation design of the facilities provided DeCA with operational savings via manpower reductions, simplified management, increased efficiency, and distribution output. The consolidation design included the addition of a new, 26,000-SF warehouse building to the existing Sagamihara distribution center with administrative offices, restrooms, lockers, break rooms and supporting utilities and the renovation/modernization of two, existing, 85,000-SF warehouse facilities.

The existing distribution facilities needed to remain operational during construction, so the design team included a detailed phasing plan to ensure there were no utility or mission disruptions during the construction phases.
