I-96 and I-196 Interchange
RS&H provided as-needed construction inspection to the Grand Rapids TSC for the initial reconstruction of the I-96 and I-196 Interchange in Grand Rapids. The project includes replacing the westbound I-196 over eastbound I-96 bridge by constructing a new bridge carrying eastbound I-96 over westbound I-196. A new structure carrying the eastbound I-96 ramp to eastbound I-196 East Beltline ramp over I-196 will also be constructed. Each bridge is a steel girder structure founded on driven pile. The westbound I-196 over eastbound I-96 bridge will be replaced with a new structure with 102” deep steel girders, while the new eastbound I-96 ramp to eastbound I-196 East Beltline structure includes 54” deep steel girders. Roadway work includes 3.08 miles of hot mix asphalt widening and temporary crossovers.
