Fort Sam Houston MWR Academy

RS&H designed a sustainable facility for the Family Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Academy at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. Studies show a high correlation between sustainable design and student/teacher health and productivity. The facility not only provides a healthy environment for students and teachers, but also achieved LEED Silver certification, meeting the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers’ (USACE) goals for the sustainable design of military facilities.

All materials and systems used in the facility meet USACE and LEED requirements for durability, longevity, and sustainability. Water-efficient landscaping that requires no irrigation results in a 30 percent reduction in the use of potable water. The facility also uses 31 percent less energy than a comparable facility through energy efficiency features. The new facility includes classrooms with movable partitions to adjust space, as well as a student lounge area and administrative offices.

During construction, RS&H oversaw the LEED operations and ensured that 75 percent of the waste was diverted from the landfill.
