Toll 49 Improvement
As part of our role as the General Engineering Consultant (GEC) for the North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority (NET RMA), RS&H provided PS&E design and construction oversight, including construction inspection and materials testing for the Toll 49 improvement project.
The project involved the widening and typical section modification of a 25-mile section of the corridor, including a 4-foot flush median to separate the northbound and southbound traffic. The $7.8 million construction project included Segments 1, 2, 3A, 3B, and 5.
One significant challenge was to minimize the lane closures and reduce the potential loss of toll revenue on the two-lane, two-way facility. RS&H’s design and phasing allowed for minimal night-time lane closures, maximizing the client’s toll revenue during construction.
The construction of the Toll 49 improvement project occurred concurrently with the construction of the Toll 49 Segment 4 project. As oversight for both projects, RS&H coordinated schedules of both contractors from the field to ensure a safe work environment in overlapping construction limits.
