The Legacy Trail
RS&H provided project management services for the design and construction of The Legacy Trail, a 10.6-mile, multi-use trail that extends from the historic Venice Depot in Venice, Florida, to north of Palmer Ranch Parkway in Sarasota. The Legacy Trail is one of the largest recreation projects undertaken by Sarasota County and is the first project within the county’s Trails Master Plan to be completed using a design-build project delivery method. The trail connects six communities, links seven county and state parks, and includes six intersections.
The Legacy Trail was built on a former rail corridor as part of the Rails-to-Trails program and was designed and constructed to incorporate the historic, environmental, and economic aspects of the rail corridor. The theme of the historic Venice Train Depot is integrated in the 13 stop station designs every mile. Additionally, 19 interpretive signs along the trail denote the significant historic and environmental aspects, including wetlands, native plants, protected species, and waterways.
