PGA Boulevard Grade Separation

RS&H conducted a feasibility study and subsequent Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study to address chronic traffic congestion at the intersection of PGA Boulevard (SR 786) and Old Dixie Highway (SR 811), which runs parallel to the Florida East Coast Railroad, in the City of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The studies resulted in approval by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Federal Highway Administration to construct a grade separation carrying PGA Boulevard over Old Dixie Highway and the railroad. This alternative used a new loop ramp in the southeast quadrant of the interchange to provide for movements previously handled as left turns in the intersection.

The team worked with a task force of local city officials and business leaders during the design process to enhance the new crossing and create a gateway to the community, thus evoking a positive image of the city and its main street, PGA Boulevard. The collaboration resulted in over $6.5 million of additional features, including bell towers, planter walls, enhanced landscaping elements, decorative lights, and other features. The city and FDOT each contributed half to the added costs of the project. Despite the substantial added coordination for the project’s design, the team maintained the overall schedule and completed the project on time.
