Proposed Heliport Environmental Assessment
Myrtle Beach International Airport
Welcome to the Myrtle Beach International Airport Proposed Heliport Environmental Assessment webpage. Horry County, which owns and operates the Myrtle Beach International Airport (Airport), is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) for a proposed heliport that would be constructed on Airport property.
Proposed Project
A 2016 Horry County Ordinance 15-16, describes that, “existing heliports and helipads that were legally operating before enactment of Section 539 in a place other than at a public-use airport shall discontinue, or be relocated in conformity with this ordinance, not later than January 1, 2024.” In compliance with Horry County Ordinance 15-16, the Horry County Department of Airports is proposing to develop a heliport within the existing Airport property to accommodate compliance with Ordinance 15-16.
The proposed heliport on Airport property includes clearing of trees and vegetation for the construction of:
- Multiple (5-6) Helipads for R44 helicopters
- Hangar
- Ticketing office
- Open air waiting areas
- Golf cart paths
- Vehicle parking
The proposed heliport at the Airport constitutes the EA’s Proposed Project.
National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
Pursuant to the requirements of NEPA, Council of Environmental Quality regulations, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Order 1050.1F, Environmental Impacts: Policies and Procedures and FAA Order 5050.4B, National Environmental Policy Act implementing Instructions for Airport Actions, an EA is being prepared for development of a proposed heliport on Airport property.
Environmental Assessment
The EA will describe the Proposed Project, the reasonable alternatives (including the “no action” alternative), and the potential impacts associated with the implementation of the Proposed Project and reasonable alternatives.
The Draft EA is anticipated to become available in the Summer of 2021 with a Final EA anticipated to be prepared in the Fall of 2021. Both the Draft EA and the Final EA will be available for review.
Agency and Public Engagement
A Virtual Public Scoping Meeting will take place on February 18th, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. EST. This event, held online via Zoom, will describe the Proposed Project, and will offer the public the opportunity to provide input on the scope of the EA. Comments on the scope of the EA can be given during the Virtual Public Scoping Meeting, or emailed directly to MYRHeliportEA@rsandh.com.
