The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) featured a section in its magazine, Transportation Builder, that displayed innovative transportation projects. The Veterans Memorial Bridge in Martin County, Florida, was selected as one of the top projects for this section in the magazine’s March/April 2014 issue.
This 3,100-foot, high-level category 2 bridge structure built within a highly sensitive environmental corridor will provide an important segment in the new connection between Florida’s Turnpike and US 1/SR 5.
The main innovative feature of this project was the use of Florida I-beams, the first time these structures were used in the state. The use of I-beams resulted in two beam line savings over design with conventional bulb-T beams.
