TAMPA, FLA. – Jan. 14, 2011 – The Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Kiley Garden projectsin downtown Tampa, both led by facilities and infrastructure consulting firm RS&H, have beenlisted among the best projects of 2010 by Southeast Construction magazine. The parks, whichopened early last year, are featured in this month’s issue alongside more than 50 other publicand private infrastructure projects across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.The magazine named Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park as the overall Best Landscaping/UrbanPlanning project and honored Kiley Garden with an Award of Excellence.
Since its opening, the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park has been at the center of downtownevents, including Gasparilla Pirate Fest, Tampa’s Friday Extra Concert Series and Tampa’sDowntown on Ice, the first open-air ice skating rink in the region. It has been dubbed the“crown jewel” of the city’s urban parks system, the centerpiece of the Tampa Riverwalk and aperfect setting for the recently opened Tampa Museum of Art and Glazer Children’s Museum.
Next door to the vibrant waterfront park, Kiley Garden, named for its creator, world-renownedmodernist landscape architect Dan Kiley, offers a peaceful refuge within the busy cityscape.RS&H’s restoration of this masterwork involved a detailed historic evaluation of the site, as wellas a phased renovation plan that included repairs to the parking garage below. Solutionsincluded an innovative new waterproofing system, as well as careful inventory, removal andreturn of the original park elements. The team’s design also allows crape myrtles to bereplanted in their original locations, one day bringing the park to its full restoration.
Southeast Construction’s annual award competition judges projects on their innovation,complexity, and contribution to the community. This year’s competition received more than180 project entries in 22 different categories across all four states.
