Bishop International Airport Receives Sponsor of the Year Award

The Bishop International Airport Authority in Flint, Michigan, was recognized as the Michigan Airport Sponsor of the Year in February. RS&H and the airport have been working together for more than 20 years. A few of our associates attended the event in support of the airport and its efforts, including Senior Aviation Engineers Pat Frame and Erich Thiel. The airport received the award from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), Office of Aeronautics at the 2014 Michigan Airports Conference.

Vote for Duluth International Airport in Architizer A+ Awards

The RS&H-designed Duluth International Airport terminal has been selected as a finalist in the airport category for the annual Architizer A+ Awards, a global competition that honors the best in architecture.

The architecture of the replacement terminal at the airport draws inspiration from local forms, materials, and landscaping that is native to the environment. The design of the landside lobby roof is a metaphor for the waves of Lake Superior. The deep reddish cladding on the service core is symbolic of the steel hulls on the freighters and ships that navigate the Great Lakes. These features and many more create a dynamic first impression to the port city of Duluth and the region.

Route 460 Connector Stimulates Economic Growth

When the Route 460 Connector in Breaks, Virginia, is completed, it will be the tallest in the state and will provide an essential link between Kentucky and Virginia through the Appalachian Mountains. The next portion of the connector project, according to a recent article from, is to start construction on Phase II, which should be completed in 2021.

As part of a larger initiative to break isolation of the region, the 460 Connector and the Coalfields Expressway will connect and create a four-lane road from Interstate 26 in Tennessee through Virginia and into the mountains beyond, which will stimulate economic growth.

RS&H serves as Owners Rep. to the design-build Route 460 Connector project and oversees CEI services.

Chung Rutter Named AIA Jacksonville Chapter President

RS&H’s Senior Architect Chung Rutter, AIA, has been installed as the 2014 President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Jacksonville Chapter.

Rutter has been with RS&H since 2000 and has served as architect and Project Manager on several projects, including Vistakon’s (Johnson & Johnson) campus expansion, Medtronic’s new surgical technologies facility, and the state-of-the-art YMCA in Jacksonville, as well as others.

Florida Department of Transportation Paves the Way for P3s

In a recent article by ENR Southeast, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is leading the way for public-private partnerships (P3s), successfully completing multiple P3s in the state. Florida has set an example for the rest of the nation, showcasing its enthusiastic attitude to get the job done. Its latest project, I-4 Ultimate, is a $2.1-billion plan that will redo 21 miles of Orlando’s main interstate.
