RS&H associates recently participated in, “Leveraging Design-Build Best Practices in a Vertical Market,” a panel hosted by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Florida Region Gulf Coast Chapter. Geared toward architects/engineers, builders, and owners, the panel discussion focused on the design-build method, process, and best practices in project delivery.
Senior Project Practice Leader for RS&H, Alba Rodriguez, A.AIA, DBIA, led the event, bringing together professionals from different disciplines to engage in open and honest dialogue about design-build.
“When selecting the panel for this event, I wanted to bring together architects, engineers, developers, contractors, and owners to share their expertise and different point of views regarding their experiences,” said Rodriguez.
The hand-selected panel included RS&H Design-Build Manager Rob Smedley, AIA, who brought his design-build experiences as a practicing architect to the conversation.
The panel also included an owner, general contractor, and developer all well-versed and experienced with design-build. “I learned a lot from being a panelist,” said Smedley. “Everyone on the panel was transparent about the challenges that are faced when it comes to design-build.”
Smedley noted that one of the biggest challenges that architects face in the design-build process is the fear of losing control of design, but he shared his own story of coming to the realization that this is not the case. This alternative delivery method is rewarding to all involved by facilitating collaboration among the owner, contractor, designers, and end users. From effectively managing project risks, to developing innovative solutions – the goal of the design-build method aims to save time, make the most of the available budget, and achieve design quality.
“Design-build provides architects and engineers a better opportunity to collaborate with a contractor to maximize value and cost to steer the direction of the finished project,” said Smedley.
Rob is a member of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) and Membership Chairperson of DBIA National and the Florida Region. His experience includes being a national speaker at conferences and participating in webcasts for more than 20 presentations to numerous government agencies and AEC organizations.
Alba serves as a Healthcare Practice Leader for RS&H’s Corporate Practice. With 33 years of experience, Alba is an expert in executing healthcare projects throughout the United States. She brings to RS&H her expertise and understanding of the design and construction industry that has enabled her to effectively deliver and coordinate efforts on multi-discipline project teams.
