RS&H has been heavily involved with the First Coast Expressway in Northeast Florida, and the job is crossing over into other facets of office life.
Such is the case when RS&H Water Resources Associate Oliver Shahbazian and a team of coworkers got together to build a miniature golf hole for “Build-Putt-Give,” a charity food drive hosted by Jacksonville engineering firm Peters & Yaffee. The event challenges area engineering firms to build a mini-golf course using nonperishable food products and their imagination.
As the RS&H team thrashed out a design, what took shape will be awfully familiar to travelers on the new Expressway.
As it turns out, the First Coast Expressway’s diverging diamond interchange makes for a nice putt-putt layout. Cans of green beans covered in orange and white paper resemble passable safety barriers. With a bit of building, cans turned on their side can look a whole lot like cars. Boxes of tomato sauce and sweet corn make for a nice border.
“We wanted to incorporate our work into building this,” Shahbazian said. “And you have some really unique parts of the First Coast Expressway project, so it was a perfect fit.”
The event raised thousands of pounds of food for the Jacksonville Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry, a community based organization serving low income residents in Jacksonville’s beaches communities and relying heavily on community support to assist neighbors in time of need. The ministry has two food pantries, a food bank, a community garden and a series of thrift stores.
Shahbazian served as RS&H’s team captain with support from Sanoj Shrestha, Lindsey Koren, Maria Vizcarrondo, Christian Bogdel, Angelique Castro, Cody Asher, Stephen Park, Scott Kroper, Vanessa Vitale, Andrew Poszich, and Courtney Hance.
