Project Description:

RS&H provided complete architectural and engineering design services for this LEED Gold certified facility, which provides for the continuously expanding multidisciplinary teaching and research activities within the College of Arts and the College of Marine Sciences. The two-story building houses general classrooms, as well as teaching laboratories and research laboratories for the environmental science, geography, marine science, and general science programs.

Some of the building’s accomplishments that earned credits towards its LEED Gold certification include:

  • Low flow fixtures that draw 30% less water from the municipal water supply and landscaping that requires no irrigation with potable water

  • Highly energy efficient systems that use 42% less energy

  • 75% of construction waste was diverted from the landfill during construction phase

  • 20% of the building materials were produced within a 500-mile radius of the project site, and a significant portion of other materials are made of rapidly renewable materials, and certified wood products

  • Infrastructure that encourages alternative modes of transportation

  • 90% of the interior space provides occupants with daylight and outdoor views
