Jacksonville Country Day School New Multipurpose Building

Jacksonville, Florida

Client:
Jacksonville Country Day School

RS&H Role/Responsibility:
Architect, Engineer, and Interior Designer

Project Description:

The integration of daylighting guided RS&H’s design for a gymnasium/multipurpose building on the campus of Jacksonville Country Day School. The design goals are to reduce energy use and improve the interior environment for building occupants, as circadian rhythms are set by the sun and studies of human response to sunlight confirm its importance to well-being. The 'butterfly' roof design facilitates daylighting by shading the windows from direct sunlight and admitting round-reflected light though a continuous clerestory. The roof structure is also sized to accommodate future solar panels to supply domestic hot water to the gym and the swimming pool. Other facility elements include:

  • Gymnasium sized for high school basketball, locker rooms, and coaching offices

  • Studio spaces for dance/karate/exercise

  • Language classroom and tutoring rooms

  • Lockers/restrooms to support existing adjacent pool

  • Separate entrance for after-hours use

  • Conference/boardroom
