CSX Dispatch Center

Florence, South Carolina

Client:

CSX Corporation

RS&H Role/Responsibility:
Architect, Building and Site Engineer, Landscape Architect, and LEED Administrator

Project Description:

As a strategic initiative, CSX is developing multiple dispatch centers throughout the southeast to improve efficiency and reliability of its dispatch functions. RS&H evaluated multiple renewable energy options and found that a solar thermal water heating equipment would be most effective option. The system has minimized the facility’s carbon footprint and decreasing the facility’s electric bill. The facility is also on track to earn LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council through:

  • Using 42% less energy than a standard facility

  • Including a solar thermal system which will reduce the electricity consumption by approximately 25,000 KWHS annually

  • The building will draw at least 30% less water from the municipal water supply through low flow fixtures, and the landscaping will not require any potable water to maintain

  • During construction, the contractor anticipated diverting at least 75% of associated waste from the landfill

  • At least 20% of the materials for the new building will have recycled content
